White Willow Bark
Native to North America, northern Asia, and much of Africa, the willow is a low-growing deciduous tree bearing long, green, tapering leaves and catkins in spring. Bark is stripped from young trees in the spring. Indigienous healers used willow bark long before Columbus or the Vikings landed.
Willow’s active chemical constituent – salicin – was identified in 1829 by the French pharmacist H Leroux. Whilst this chemical is a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic, studies show several other components of Willow bark (including polyphenols and flavonoids), have antioxidant, fever reducing, antiseptic and immune boosting properties. Some studies show that this plant is as effective as aspirin for reducing pain and inflammation at much lower doses.
It has been shown to relieve headaches and is less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects than synthesized pain relievers such as ibuprofen.
When it comes to the skin, like most plant extracts, willow bark contains flavonoids and tannins—powerful antioxidants that help protect skin from environmental stressors. Willow bark is also a source of natural hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate. The result is smoother, softer skin.
Do not use if allergic to aspirin or other salicylate-containing drugs.
